Welcome to Honeyflow Farm's Beeswax Candle Shop Votive Page. Our votives are 1 3/4 inch tall & 1 1/2 inch at base, weigh 1.9 oz, usually burn 12+ hours, and are hand made at our farm in Michigan. The votives are made by pouring hot beeswax in special molds. We have making these candles for more than 30 years from our Honey and Candle Farm. We test all of our candles for length of burn, quality of flame, smokiness and other factors. Beeswax Candles will burn longer and cleaner than all other waxes. Votives must be burned in proper votive holders similar to size of the votive. All beeswax should burn the same, varying slightly by the type of flowers it came from and the wick that is used. Every candle will burn different - depending on slight variances on the amount of wax that is in it, how the wick is positioned (sometimes a wick at a slight angle may burn stronger and not last quite as long), the container it is in, drafts when burning, etc. Why are Tea Lights included in Votive Orders? We have been including Free Tea Lights in Candle Orders for many years and our customers really enjoy the extra value. A little info about beeswax: Beeswax is made from the nectar of flowers! The honeybees produce beeswax from wax glands on the sides of their body and use it to create "cells" to store their honey in. Its color may vary from white to yellow or brown. It possesses a subtle aroma, the fragrance of honey ingrained with the other scents present in a bee hive. The demand for beeswax exceeds the supply in most years. For this reason, it is expensive. On the average, eight pounds of honey are consumed by the bees for each pound of wax made by the colony. A large amount of the available beeswax is used in cosmetics and in many waxes and polishes. Other waxes were tried as an alternative to beeswax. Tallow, the fat rendered from cattle or sheep was messy, didn't burn long and had an offensive odor. Waxes from sperm whales & vegetables were tried and were somewhat better. In the mid 1800's paraffin, a by-product of crude oil was discovered. Most paraffin waxes burn at a lower temperature than beeswax and are used for most mass produced candles that are sold today. We use only beeswax on our farm to produce candles! Our candles are made from raw, unprocessed wax produced by Michigan beekeepers. The wax is cleaned by lightly straining it & letting it "settle" in a large tank where the heavier impurities settle to the bottom then filtered to .5 microns, this will ensure that the fragrance and quality of the wax will not be damaged by being over processing. Our candles are handmade products and each one will be unique. In keeping with this natural theme we use large old fashioned "square braid" wicks in most of our candles, which makes the candles absorb the wax better, allowing them to burn brighter and drip less. Beeswax has been found in the pyramids virtually unchanged after 1000s of years. A well-made candle will create virtually no smoke when burning properly. However, if the wick becomes too long, or an air current disturbs the flame's teardrop shape, small amounts of unburned carbon particles (soot) will escape from the flame as a visible wisp of smoke. Any candle will soot if the flame is disturbed. To avoid this, always trim the wick to ¼ inch before every use and be sure to place candles away from drafts, vents or air currents. If a candle continually flickers or smokes, it is not burning properly and should be extinguished. Allow the candle to cool, trim the wick, make sure the area is draft free, then re-light.
